1983. In 1984, the company brought to the Joyce Theater in New York a series of productions that it had developed in Europe. Meanwhile, Beck and Malina appeared in films by such notable directors as Pasolini, Bertolucci, Coppola, Lumet and Mazursky. Shortly before his death in 1985, Julian Beck gave a highly-acclaimed performance in Samuel Beckett's That Time at La Mama E. T. C. in New York and in Frankfort. ■

I GREW UP on the plays and ideas of The Living Theatre. Their rare combination of pacifist politics, surrealist and epic art inspired generations. For me, it was a special delight as well as a stupendous artistic height when Judith directed and The Living Theatre co-produced my play, US. It is difficult to imagine the theatre without The Living Theatre... So, happy anniversary, live on and on and 0n... ■ Karen Malpede

THANKS for the courage and the inspiration. ■ Everett Quinton

JUDITH, some part of you is always Moving through my life. No, is My life in a manner I don't fully understand. Yes it's truly a small island, this community Of lives we call humanity, and we seem to Travel through each other, even as the Tracks some make are deeper, even as the Community is some layered sediment Sitting on other layers it s barely aware of. Feisty Judith, have you ever had a moment when an opinion left you in peace? You aren't Tireless, surely not, but you don't give in. You just keep giving. ■ Arthur Sainer

THE LIVING THEATRE ON 3RD STREET: 1989 - PRESENT After performances at Theater for the New City and Charras, The Living Theatre found a home on East 3rd Street - the troupe's first permanent home after 26 years on the road. The regenerated company's new work, as seen in The Tablets, I And I, Tumult, The Body of God, German Requiem, The Rules of Civility, Humanity, and Waste, demonstrates a consistently principled approach to making theatre. The Living Theatre has staged more than 70 fullscale works performed in eight languages in 24 countries on four continents a unique body of work. ■

THE 1980'S counted thirty years a generation; the count shrinks to five or ten in the speedster 1990'5, impatient for new and passing incident. In this entropie climate the forty years of The Living Theatre reminds us that there can be continuity of the new, renewal within continuity. ■ Armand Schwerner

MY PLAY GERMAN REQUIEM ran for 2 months at the Living Theatre in 1990. The play presented difficulties. The only other venue for it would have been the Metropolitan Opera House. Or maybe Madison Square Garden. The Living Theatre did it in their... burrow at Avenue C and 3rd Street. Yes, tire imperial city of Worms was to be seen in all its medieval grandeur and quaintness. With full orchestra. For without vision, the people perish! ■ Eric Bentley

I LOVE THE LIVING THEATRE because it demolishes every boundary and steps off into the unknown and thus inspires us all. ■ Estelle Persons
