Teorema is the film adaptation of Pasolini's controversial novel of the same name (published by Garzanti, Milan, 1968) and was made without a written script. An outstanding cinematic essay and an amazing analysis of the disintegration of a bourgeois family after the unexpected visit of a modern Saviour, Christ and Marx, blended in an enigmatic figure majestically played by the British actor Terence Stamp. Visually brilliant and shocking in its treatment of the subject, the film is a clinically detached vivisection of the symbols of self-destruction, spiced with eroticism and decadence and a high emotional charge. Close to Bunuel and his poetics in terms of style, Teorema and Pigpen, alongiside The Gospel According to Matthew, are Pasolini's best films. Teorema achieves the best ever and the most functional fusion of Marxism and religion. It is a political allegory and at the same time, a modern mystical faity-tale. A film must be naturalistic. When I want to show a dustman in the cinematic medium, I find a real dustman and bring his body and voice to life. Pier Paolo Pasolini
