ARCHAEOLOGY OF VIOLENCE IN 20 th CENTURY DISCUSSION ON THE POLICIES OF MEMORY
Some of the phenomena that defined XX c. in the sense of history, culture, sociology and politics - revolutions, colonialism, imperialism, nationalism, socialism - are also rooted in the time preceding the First World War. Through the XX c. conflicts, these phenomena have become global and deeply ingrained in the “collective conscience”. What is the position of the First World War in the entire XX c. context? How to approach its heritage and the way in which “battle fronts”, as its defining symbol (although, in terms of military strategy, it was abandoned only two decades later) continued to define our mental maps? Is it possible to connect colonial armies’ violence over civilians to the cruelties shown in Europe during the First World War, and if so, in which way?
The discussion will address and problematize “the big bang” of the First World War, i.e. Its circumstances and the following consequences for Europe and its culture, as well as the possibilities of artistic representations of violence. The participants are internationally renowned historians, philosophers, and theatre and visual artists. Moderator: Milica Jovanovič, Peščanik journalist Subject-matter expert: PhD Olga Manojlović-Pintar, historian Participants: Hans-Verner Kroesinger, Regine Dura, Boris Buden, Milica Tomič, Borut Šeparovič, Olga Manojlović-Pintar
