Katerina is a young woman trapped in the icy atmosphere of the house belonging to Kabanova, her mother-in-law, a rich merchant who tyrannises a young trio: her daughter-in-law Katerina, her daughter Varvara yearning for life and her son Tikhon, a weakling who sees his wife Katerina as a necessary evil and seeks refuge from women in the house in a bottle of vodka. The town by the Volga is also the residence of a Muscovite Boris Grigorovich whose financial fate is at the mercy of his short-tempered uncle Dikoy, a prominent merchant. Forbidden love is born between Katerina and Boris during several silent meetings on the promenade. The clockmaker Kuligin tries to make a perpetuum mobile and the storm is about to break out over the Volga. While Tikhon is away in Moscow for two weeks, Katerina’s faithfulness is put to test.
