★ YANA ROSS (1973) is American theatre director based in Lithuania. She broke through on international scene with bold and shocking interpretations of Nobel lauriette Elfriede Jelinek’s plays, to which Jelinek praised her ability to push actors beyond intellectual rigor and into the physical danger of being on stage. Frank Castorf reacted by invitng Ross to stage Heiner Muller Macbeth on the legendary political arena of Volksbühne am Rosa Luxemburg Platz. From then on, the artist hand-picks the most challenging and seductive materials for leading theaters in Europe. Her recent premieres are Ruhl’s Eurydice at National Theater of Finland and Slobodzianek’s Our Class at her home Lithuanian National Drama Theater in Vilnius. Ross holds an MFA from Yale University and is a Fulbright Fellow. She served as a managing editor at Yale Theater Magazine on a special volume: Russian Theater of the 21st Century, for which she received John Gassner Memorial prize. She is a resident director at the Lithuanian National Drama Theater, 2006-present.
