the results would be fantastic. In Figs. 88 and 89, each character is deliberately distorted in shape and pattern. In Fig. 88 the shape of the stroke itself is grotesque, while in Fig. 89 the composition is over-fanciful. Both testify unmistakably to lack of taste and training in the writer.

Chinese calligraphy—a lively conception of some equilibrium of forces—can only be achieved by concentrated and unremitting scholarly study.
