The reconstruction of South-Eastern Europe

SOUTH-EASTERN EUROPE

With the exception of some few eager and independent minds, who have studied the conditions of the Southern Slavs on the spot, Vienna and Budapest contrived to keep Europe in ignorance concerning them. The erroneous view was generally spread that so many provinces in which they live contain as many different little nationalities, quarrelling amongst themselves, for whom no sort of civilised life could be thought of without the Pax Germanica being imposed upon them. In the following chapters we intend to expose the fallacy of this contention and to show that the Southern Slavs, by their past and present, are fully entitled to freedom and unity.
