That question is: is t this theatre? In order to §r Lß V £ß я я J/ Í express a certain image of " KsSl the world> theatre has begun to examine its very being, to be concerned with the question of the nature of theatre, at what point it becomes theatre, what are its specific characteristics, and what differentiates it from other fields of expression, such as literature, art, cinema and television. Some performances and thatrical undertakings are concerned with this question. Our reply »it is« or »it isn’t « theatre indicates whether we are for ontological theatre and therefore wish to experiment, or whether we abide by a status quo and ready-made solutions in the theatre as in the world in which we live. The aim of the International Workshop on Theatrical Research, held under the auspices of Unesco and within the framework of the Theatre of Nations-Bitef 10, is to demonstrate, study and develop new theatrical forms and techniques; to train participants in the use of these forms and techniques by the way of practical work and theoretical analysis, and then to experiment with these and other potential methods of theatrical research. Thus, by examining and querying the very essence of theatre, the Workshop will ask the question: »What is theatre?«.

Thrirteen theatrical troupes, as well as experts, pedagogues, critics and playwrights from all over the world will take partin the Workshop. Vincente Gaeta (USA), Per Ove Rarfôrs (Sweden), Wilhelm Carlsson (Sweden), Ap Overweel (Holland), Mike Parson (Wales), Hugo Benavente (France), Nick Sales (Great Britain), Josef Casali (Spain), Tony Llopis (Spain), Wojtek Krukowski (Poland), Lado Kralj (Yugoslavia), Carita Rindell (Finland), Pino di Buduo (Italy), Adriana Molinar (Italy), Ferruccio Marotti (Italy), Fabrizio Cruciani (Italy), Franco Ruffini (Italy), Nicola Savarese (Italy), Nando Taviani (Italy), Michel Dezoteux (Belgium), Pierre le Pichón (France), Jean-Michel Ribes (France). It will take place in the Faculty of Dramatic Art, in an open space and in social institutions in Belgrade, and work will continue from 21st to 28th September. All the activities will be videotaped and a group of theatrical experts and critics will prepare documentary and analytical material which will be published in Unesco publications.
