THE WORK OF ROBERT WILSON In June 1 981, following the Paris debut of Robert Wilson's Deafman Glance, Louis Aragon wrote a posthumous letter to Andre Breton in Les Lettres Françaises, in which he claimed that »I have never seen anything more beatiful in the world«. Hailed as a »revolution of the plastic arts one sees only once or twice in a generation«. Deafman Glance was the product of several years of theatrical research in New York City, during which time Wilson led numerous workshops and Impromptu performances with the Byrd Hoffman School of Byrds. Following Deafman Glance, Wilson

presented a number of influential productions, including the seven-day play KA MOUNTain and GUARDenia Terrace in Shiraz, Iran in 1982; The Life and Times of Joseph Stalin, a twelve-hour silent opera performed in 1973 in New York and throughout Erurope and South America; A Letter for Queen Victoria in Europe and on Broadway in 1 974-1 975; and, in 1 976, his landmark opera with composer Philip Glass, Einstein on the Beach. After Einstein on the Beach, Wilson worked increasingly in state-sup ported Europeanpheatres. He created two exemplary productions with the permanent company of the Schaubühne Theatre in Berlin: Death Destruction & Detroit (1 979) and Death Destruction & Detroit II (1 978). In the early 1 980's, Wilson worked on what still stands as his most ambitious project to date; the multi-national epic, the CIVIL warS: a tree is best measured when it Is down. The opera was created in collaboration with an international group of arists and was intended for inclusion in the 1 984 Olympic Arts Festival in Los Angeles. Although the full epic was never seen in its entirety, individual parts of the opera have been produced in the United States, Europe and Japan. Since 1 985, Wilson's vision has come to include opera nad adaptations of other playwrights works. He has staged and designed many classical operas at such houses as La Scala in Milan, the Opera Bastille in Paris, the Zurich Opera, the Hamburg Opera, the Lyric Opera of Chicago and the Houston Grand Opera. In the last two years, he has directed and designed productions of Parsifal (Hamburg Opera, 1991), The Magic Flute (Opera Bastille, 1991) and Lohengrin Zurich Opera, 1991). Wilson's works this past year include Georg Buchner's Danton's Death, Gertrude Steins s Doctor Faustus Lights the Lights and the premiere of the Wilson / Tom Waits musical Alice. Wilson's upcoming productions include Susan Sontag s Alice in Bed at the Berlin Schaubühne and a film adaptation of Heiner Müller's Death of Möllere.
