THE LIVING THEATRE - FORTY YEARS Beginnings. The Cherry Lane Theatre 1951 - 1952. The Living Theatre was founded in 1947 by Julian Beck and Judith Malina in their apartment on the Upper West Side. Its establishment at the Cherry Lane Theatre in 1951 began the revival of Greenwich Village as the center of avant-garde theatrical life in America. At the Cherry Lane, it led the movement to create a new poetic theatre through productions of works by such writers as Bertolt Brecht, Garcia Lorca, Gertrude Stein, T. S. Eliot and the younger Americans Paul Goodman, Kenneth Rexroth, and John Ashbery. ■

THE LIVING THEATRE'S extraordinary history continues to be a source of inspiration to those who are committed to the future of the theatre by drawing on the best from the past, ■ George Bartenieff

DURING THE PAST FORTY YEARS, Tire Living Theatre has contributed very significantly and valuably to the movement for social betterment and world peace. Beginning with the plays Julian Beck and Judith Malina produced in their West End Avenue living room, they revived Modernist theatre in New York (Stein, Picasso, Eliot, Cocteau, Pirandello, Rexroth, Williams). Then gradually their anarchist pacifist politics came to inform their work as they developed a modern social theatre via Brecht, Paul Goodman, and such younger authors as Jack Gelber and Kenneth Brown. After 1962, in Europe, Brazil, and then again here, they worked out a specifically anarchist pacifist theatre in which productions were produced collectively. This unique attempt to influence society via theatre forms exemplifying the ends in view, rather than merely propagandizing for them abstractly, has had worldwide repercussions. We honor Tire Living Theatre on this anniversary. ■ Jackson Mac Low

THE LIVING THEATRE, FOR 40 YEARS has made an incredible contribution to what is known as American Culture. And they do, until this day, occupy a warm place in the hearts, minds and memories of their fellow artists. This shall always be a »given« in the American history as it is known, as it will be known for the American Cultural contribution in this world. ■ Ellen Stewart

AS THE FOUNDATION of all contemporary theatre, let's keep The Living Theatre alive! By doing so, we can ensure the ongoing life of all theatre. ■ Flo Kennedy

THE LIVING IS A THEATRE INSTITUTION of unparalleled importance in the history of contemporary theatre. Several generations of directors, writers and composers, including myself, have benefited from its influence. It has been a model of artistic idealism and integrity. 1 Philip Glass

FORTY YEARS, the span of a lifetime. As dreamtime it goes on & on - Living Theatre, a binding commitment, a spiritual migration. I remember how Julian said from his hospital bed, "I would like to go to India with you". Thought it seemed impossible, in some way it came to pass, and as I look at a disembodied marigold shirt hanging on a wire, I see Julian in, has favorite color. Though in the West to call someone a saint might seem tire height of hubris, here in India we know that a saint is just another semiserious guy in flip flops, someone ’ who might have stood next to you like Julian Beck, someone from whom a special light shines. As much as light goes beyond its definition, you are still traveling, Julian, Pure Soull Pure Poet! Pure Provocateur! You sit in the Palace of
