She studied organ, bass flute and composition, graduated in organ, studied theatre and the history of art at the Vienna University. During her studies she took an active part in literary debates and students'movement. From 1974 till 1991 she was a member of the Austrian Communist Party. She published her first book of poetry in 1967, first novel We're all bait, baby (Wir sind lockvögel baby!) in 1970, followed by a number of plays for radio and theatre and novels. She received numerous important awards. She lives in Vienna and Munich. Selected works: novels The Piano Teacher (Die Kiavrespielerin), 1983; Children of the Dead (Die Kinder der Toten), 1995; plays Motel (Rasstäatte), 1993; Sports drama (Ein Sportstück), 1998; Bambi Republic (Bambiland), 2003.
