Bitef

On 26 th December 1967, Mira Trailović and Jovan Ćirilov founded Bitef (Belgrade International Theatre Festival). Mira Trailović was its artistic director from 1967 until she died in 1989. It was at her initiative that on 3 March 1989 Bitef Theatre, the offspring of the oldest and most significant theatre festivals, was founded as a cultural institution of significance for Belgrade and beyond. From the manifesto to the opening ceremony to the design of its original visual identity (incorporating a tree which grows in the square) Mira made it abundantly clear that the stage space of the new theatre included both the building’s interior and what lay outside its walls in the square which today bears her name. The project aims to breathe new life into Mira Trailović Square as a sustainable public place of the municipality and the city which should interact with its functional characteristics and its cultural context, meaning its origin, evolution and changes it went through over time. By cultivating the cultural identity and promoting differences through culture, arts and active participation of the community. Bitef Zone wants to emphasize the necessity, importance and contribution of citizens to the shaping of our city’s future and its urban culture. The square which makes people come across one another, meet, come in and out, brings into the focus of the community-ies around it various contents addressing programmatic, aesthetic, cultural, spatial and perceptive potential significantly determining the identity of the site. Bitef Zone believes that the square, as a part of Belgrade’s city fabric, can establish a network of open city spaces as possible locations/protagonists of cultural events in open air and set in motion further transformation of areas and boroughs in the Municipality of Stari Grad and the City of Belgrade, their promotion and a more balanced development of culture in different parts of the city. It studies, maps, produces and incorporates different cultural and artistic contents happening in open air in front of the theatre founded by Mira Trailović. The project envisages production, presentation, preservation, promotion, consumption and educational and other communications and interactions of cultural and artistic contents and forms of Bitef Theatre, the local community of the Municipality of Stari Grad and the City of Belgrade. On the map of our city Bitef Zone should become one of Belgrade’s ‘made new places’ and a meeting point in public space.
