should acquire the status of a book, to be stored in a public recording library and to be lent out to and listened to by associations of radio drama lovers. It should епјоу the same life in a group, society or circle, as is enjoyed by literature and music. The values of the magnetic transcript, a phono-book cannot be assessed at one reading. It is really up to the consumer as to whether he will choose it, throw it aside, or put it on a shelf. It is the task of the radio station to initiate and support this kind of cultural activity, organising as befits a mass medium the most suitable circular distribution of selected material, and founding clubs, propaganda drives, audience participation programmes, pubiic performances, concerts and discussions, taking note of subscribers, opinions and arousing in listeners an active interest in the genre, and lastly, coordinating this cultural drive with the publishing houses. It is only in this way that the efforts of many radio creators will be prevented from evaporating »into thin air«. The purpose of this article has been to suggest the urgent steps which need lo be taken in this direction and to point out both new requirements and new fields of action.
