something close to a 1 1/2 mile radius of CCNY , where around 100,000 people live . We call this neighborhood our primary service area . We also have a secondary service area . It's not that we think that the people who live in this secondary area are less important than those who live in our primary area . It's just that, because the secondary area is so much larger , and because we can't be sure our signal is received throughout the агеа , we concentrate on a smaller area that we know more about and know we can reach with,our signat. Our secondary service area has (these are approximate) ; . .. a southern bounđary of 96th Street; . . . a northern boundary of the tip of Manhattan; . . . a western boundary of the Hudson River; , . . an eastern boundary of the Harlem and the East Rivers . The population of this area is much greater and much more diverse than our primary area,. This larger area, which is pretty much all of Manhattan within a 2 1/2 mile radius of the CCNY campus, is the potential listening audience we have to think about. But we concentrate on our "primary агеа" neighborhood of Harlem in most of our programming - at least for now . џ For More On ... WHCR and Its Listeners see Section Four . What is neighborhoođ radio for Harlem? WHCR wants to be a good neighbor to the people who reside in our neighborhood . It is a part of the long effort of The City College to organize and run programs of community outreach and facilities access for Harlem residents . We don't have to tell people who live here that the neighborhood has great strengths and severe problems . Our role as the neighborhood's radio station is to help build on those strengths and help to solve those problems . So our programming talks about what's going on around the neighborhood and talks with people who live here to see how they feel about that. In ađdition , we provide coverage of other events in the world , the nation , the state , and the city which are important to Harlem residents.
