RTV Theory and Practice - Special Issue

Part of our experiment is to try to create a way of doing radio that is best for the people in our neighborhood . We think that to đo that we need to have those people involved as much as possible with the station . Напу students from City College work on the station, and some volunteers f rom the community work with us also . But we can always use more volunteers, and we have plenty of work that needs to be done all the time . There are a couple of things we should say about the work that neeđs to be done. First, if you work at the station, you will not .be asked to take on only the jobs that the regular staff does not want to do. In other words, at WHCR everybody licks stamps and stuffs envelopes . We don't do this because we particularly like the humdrum work , but because we are committed to a station which communicates with and for its listeners . So we feel that to ask those listeners to be a part of the station we have to create opportunities for work at the station that has some meaning for the volunteers . We don-'t promise that you won't be askeđ to contribute to the station's day to day operations with some less-exciting jobs , but we do promise that everybody shares those jobs as well as the "glamorous" work of WHCR . The other side of the coin is that we ask you to make a commitment to the station. If you volunteer , you will need to arrange to keep working with us for a periođ of time , and , as we saiđ earlier , you will be asked to come in for an interview . This is how we try to achieve a "professional" operation at WHCR. We don't expect you to have all the radio skills, or an announcer's voice , or unlimited time to work with us . WHCR is a place to learn , for CCNY stuđents and community residents . Therefore , you shouldn't feel that you are not skilled enough to work with us . Even if you think you have no skills for radio , come talk to a staff meinber ; you will probably be surpriseđ at what skills you actually have that will help us quite a bit. What WHCR expects of its workers is a -commitment to neighborhood radio, to positive change in the community, and to building the есопоту of Harlem as an important place in the world. After all, Harlem is The World's Best-Known Neighborhood , and WHCR wants to be worthy of being called Harlem's Neighborhoođ Radio Station - The World's Best. ► For More On ...
