RTV Theory and Practice - Special Issue

is an active station volunteer may attend . And апу volunteer may propose an issue for discussion by the group. The Station Manager appoints a Volunteer Group Co-ordinator , who makes sure the meetings are scheduled , sees that they meet on schedule, anđ reports to the station staff on what comes up . The Community Board represents the listeners and other important neighborhood groups . The Board meets three times a уеаг to advise the Station Manager , and the membership of the Board varies from meeting to meeting , This is because Board members are both/elected and appointed , and the Station Manager can add to the core of elected members (who come from defineđ community constituencies ) when some issue of immediate importance needs to reach the Board . The meetings of the Board are always announced several weeks in advance and are open to everyone. As much as possible, WHCR wants the Board meeting to be a ”town meeting" for those interested in the station anđ communication in our community . Programming at WHCR is handled by Program Teams (which we describe next) . The fifteen Program Teams each elect a Co-ordinator who is in charge of keeping that Team on the job and on track . The fifteen Co-ordinators - one from each team; the Department of Communication, Film anđ Video representative; and the Volunteers' Interest Group Co-ordinator meet with the Station Manager once every two weeks . This body is the Programmers' Council, which proposes policy about what the station should put on the air . Since the main purpose of WHCR is to do radio , on the air , this is a кеу group in the station's structure . If you are interested in working with WHCR , the Program Teams are the first piaces to look into . Each Team sets its own rules and method of doing thmgs , subject to the approvat of the Station Manager , and takes responsibility for programming in its area . The current fifteen areas in which there are Teams, which can change with new ideas that come up, are: • Focus оп Jobs; employment opportunities and problems of unemployment m the community; • Focus on Housing; developing the communitv's housing stock and the problem of "gentrification"; • Harlem in the City and the State : events in municipal and state government that affect the community; • Harlem in the World Community : issues of importance to Harlemites from Africa, the Caribbean , Latin Amenca and around the world; • Focus on City College : eđucational and cultural programming by students and staff of the college; ♦ Focus on Youth : programs for and by young people , ref lectmg their perspectives and mterests; • Local History Project : develops
