RTV Theory and Practice - Special Issue

radio stations In the United States , but it taKes into account what we have learned from how some other broadcasting outtets organize themselves . Host of the stations in the U.S. , since they are commercial anđ must make топеу from their advertising , are set up as a pyramid , with the owner at the top and the workers arranged at lower levels , until you get to the bottom level where the lowliest members of the workforce are . The business and sales side of these stations tends to dominate the programming side , so the power in the structure of the station is not shared . This kind of structure is not appropriate for WHCR . For one thing , we need a way for our listeners anđ volunteers to contribute to the polic/ of the station . For another , we dorTt have to be concerned with sales anđ marketing the way advertising-supported stations are . But we do have to take into account the needs anđ wishes of City College , and that also makes us different from commercial outlets . Around the world , in the community radio movement, there are models for how to set up the structure of a station which will allow maximum participation by the audience of the station . And there are also ways to make sure that all the people who work at the station , paid full-time staff as well as part-timers and volunteers , have a say in how the station is run . This is not such a strange iđea : if listeners are asked to support the station through their топеу and if staff and volunteers keep us going with their work , both groups shoulđ have a role in making policy for the statlon . In Section One we outlined some of the staff positions and policy-making bodies at the station . Here we'd like to expand on those descriptions a bit and also tell you how to get involved in the structure if you are interested . We told you in Section One that the core staff of WHCR is the Station Manager; the Engmeer; the Program , News/Public Af fairs , and Community Relations , Directors; and the Office Manager . These six peopie are responsible for the day-to-day runnmg of the station, Once a week , the Station Manager meets with these staff members , a representative of the Department of Communications , Film and Video , and a representative of the College admimstr ation to discuss everythmg that needs discussing about WHCR . These eight people are the Manager's Cabmet , which is the major advisory group for the Station Manager , The Volunteers' Interest Group meets once a month. Апуопе who
