PREFACE TO THIRD EDITION

Iw issuing a cheaper edition of this work, the second edition of 1925 being exhausted, opportunity has been taken to add notes on a Phcenician seal and on an “ Hittite ” stone Double Axe of about 1800 B.C. found in Ireland, and to correct a few misprints.

Here, I have much pleasure in gratefully acknowledging the numerous additional observations with photographs and sketches of inscriptions and other ancient remains that I have received from many correspondents and which I hope to incorporate later in a supplementary volume.
