to Chaplin, Sr. Her artistic name was Lily Harley. Before the marriage she gave birth to her son Sydney. Charles Spencer Chaplin, Jr. was born in 1889. They lived comfortably until her relationship with Leo Dryden, another music-hall artist, became public. She had another son with him. After all these events, poverty struck them. Charles was too young to understand what was happening. Much later he found out that he had a half-brother Wheeler Dryden. It is not known when and where Hannah contracted syphilis which entailed neurological complication, the degeneration of brain cells and insanity. At 33, she was transferred to Cane Hill Lunatic Asylum. Fortunately, none of Hannah's sons contracted the disease from her. BROTHERS, i.e. half-brothers Wheeler Dryden (1892 - 1958), British film actor and director; father of the famous drummer Spencer Dryden. The father took infant Wheeler away from his sick mother. It was only in the 1920 s that he learned from his father who his mother and brothers were. He had eleven children. Mildred Harris, the first wife, was 16 - and he was 29 - when they married in 1918. Their only son died when three months (sic!) old. They divorced in 1921. Lolita Mac Murray, artistic name Lita Grey, his second wife, was also 16 when they married in 1924. He was 35. They had two sons - Charles Spencer Chaplin, Jr. and Sydney Earl Chaplin. They divorced in 1927. Both their sons were actors and, like many other members of their family, appeared in Limelight. Chaplin married his third wife Paulette Goddard secretly onboard a ship in 1933. He was 44 and she 19 years of age. The public learned about the marriage in 1936 and the divorce came in 1942. Chaplin's fourth wife with whom he remained for the rest of his life was Oona O'Neill. In 1943, when she married him against the will of her father, the noted playwright Eugene O'Neill, she was 18.
