History tempted him as well: from imprisonmcent in Sibenik (in Dalmatia, Croatia) and Maribor (in Slovenia) in 1914. 1915, to confinement in Ovcarevo and Zenica (Bosnia-Herzegovina) until IO17, up to emissary in Berlin where he cncountcred Hitler eye to cyc in 1939 and his presence at the capitulation in Vienna on March the 25th 1941, followed by the war timc in Belgrade. "This and many other things marked his life, which according to his magnifying glass, looked like this:

„It seems to me as if pcople knew what an cffort it was for me to live, they WOuld find it casicr to forgive me all the cvil I did and all good I missed out on, and

still there would be some feelings left to feel sorry for me” (from „Signs by the road”). Andric, whose entry to the world of literature was celebrated as carly as in 1914, accomplished literary achicvement by novels he completed in occupied Belgrade from 1942-1944: „Na Drini Cuprija” (The Bridge on the Drina Hiver), „Travnicka hronika” (The Chronicle of Travnik) and „Gospodjica” (The Misses).

French Is Not the Language of Nostalgia

...Francophones are activists supporting equality of cultural politic of all states. During the week before and after 20th of March, French language will be celebrated through literature, somngs, sports, arts, in qualifications for employment, in science and industry. French is not the language of nostalgia. It is modern and precise language, which is enriched constantly by the works of linguists and inventive usage, it allows expression of 2Oth century reality.

This year we want to honor Gilles Vern who died hundred years ago. The title French language of scientific adventure... was chosen for the „sheme of the week of the French language and Francophone culture.

March the 2Oth and the following days, French language will shine thanks to those who speak French, but also to those who want to join Francophone efforts in reducing effects of globalization. To call on Francophony does not mean to be skilled in art of word usage but to have one's own stand on the world that should be created, said amongst else Kavier Dracos, French minister for cooperation, development and

Francophony, prior to the celebration on March the 20th.

"There is not a single work amongst them that is unimportant, nor therc is anybody amongst us to whon Andric novels have nothing important to say. All roads of our and their faith CrO5S SOmewhere in „Ex Ponto”, writers manifesto „Put Alije

The King of Serbian Cinema

Museum of Belgrade”s cinema shows retrospective of almost all works by director

Zika Mitrovic

As in other instances, this important artists of Serbian culture and art, it took a long time before the light was shed on-the value and the contribution to the decvelopment of Serbian and Yugoslavian cinematography by our prominent dircctor and most often scenario co-writer Zivorad Zika Mitrovic (Belgrade 1921 2005) who was practicing illustrator . in his youth (amongst other things comics), to become complctely devoted to film from 1946 onwards. The Museum of Yugoslav cinema is making the first step in this direction, starting from today until Monday, March the 21st, it seriously prepares retrospective of Mitrovic's work, offering to the audience to watch (a)ncewhis three documentary and all 20 films.

It will certainly be useful cencounter with quality domain of Serbian king of the cinema that is repertoire film, as Dimitrije VOojnov calls it in the text of Museum's monthly program. In his review, professor Dejan Kosanovic emphasizes that Mitrovic, through his very important films from Serbian history, such

as Nevesinjska puska (19603), Timocka Buna (1983) and Mars na Drinu (1964) is the best in the genre and maybe through all his work opposes nowadays often repeated story that in Tito's Yugoslavia, Serbian past was not to be mentioncd. Also in his film spectacle Uzicka republika (1974) he managed to cap-

ture characters and rcasons of disputes between Partisans and ·Cetniks 1941 says Kosanovic, and the above mentioned thecsis are surely waiting: our eternal separations in (over) valuing Serbian histOry. Jelena Milenkovic, next to above mentioned, points out that characteristic for Zika Mitrovic is his own

film making and procedure, and on the other side,(they say Yugoslavian western), casily understood films which keep the attention strongly, films with striking, actors such as Aleksandar Aca Gavric, Petre Prlicko, Bata Zivojinovic, Danicl Zelen, LJubisa Samardic, and gorgeous actresses Olga Spiridonovic, Olivera Mar-

kovic, Marija Tocinska, Seclma Karlovac, Irena Papas, Bozidarka Frajt, Olivera Jezina. That is why Mitrovic remains the favorite dircctor of the audicnce at large, despite the years past, it certainly remembers ontological seqjuences from the films such as Poslednji kolosck: the song by Olivera Markovic, Kapetan Lesi: Lesis physical dispute with

black market person om which the famous son de dicated to the brave captaih follows, Uzicka republika hungry boy asking, the bike ry man if all that brad {in the bakery) belongs to him, Mars na Drinu, because the point of the artwoftk is to go beyond tbc framework it talks about and the time o its Creation.

The program will open by projection of Mitrovic first feature film Esalon doktora M (1955) IO night at 7.Miss Ston (1958) will follow at 0 and before them documentaf} films Nove _ pobede ((1964), Prve svetlosti (1949) and Zemlja je cekala traktor(1951), will bć shown today at five.
