was performed this June at the Boner Biennale festival. In December 1997 he was presented with the Kortner Prize, the most prestigious German theatre award, in Berlin which he shared with Anna Viebrock. The same year he received the most important international theater award - European Award For New Theater Reality 1997 which is presented every year in Taormine in Sicily. Members of the international jury are Jack Lang (the chairman), George Banu (chairman of the International society of theatre critics), Michael Billington (The Guardian), Jovan Cirilov (Bitef) etc. Before Marthaler, the same aword have received: Anatolij Vasiljev, Giorgio Barbero Corseti, Comediants, Eimuntas Necrosius, Theatre de Complicité, Carte Blanche - Compagnia della Forteza, and in 1998 Royal Court.

Poslednja velika autonómna pojava "Drago mi je što je Christoph Marthaler dobro ovu nagrada. Raduje me što je reč o pozorišnom reditelju. Sada bih radije sedeo s njim tamo gde i pripadamo, u baru hamburškog Rajhshofa; tu sam od njega naučio da pijem malt-whiskey, za šta sam mu do dañas zahvalan. Mogu da pomenem samo nekoliko stvari koje me možda pogadaju i koje ne mogu ili ne žele nigde da se svrstaju, i to u vreme kada se bliži smena milenijuma i kada se čovek bavi nečim u šta možda više uopšte nije übeden. Mi pravimo pozorište, a ti, Christophe, smem to da kažem, imaš sreču da uvek možeš da pobegneš u muziku. A tamo i pripadaš, dok demo gospodin Langhoff i ja do kraja života raditi govorne vežbe. Christopha Marthalera sam upoznao 1988. u Švajcarskoj (bio je to moj prvi boravak na Zapadu). Sedeli smo u nekoj kafani u Bazelu; on je animirao goste da pevaju;
