BAHANTKINJE

Theatre on the Ruhr (1980-1988) Founded as a private corporation in the summer of 1980 by Roberto Ciulli. Gralf-Edzard Habben and Helmut Schaefer, the Theatre on the Ruhr started rehearsals by the fall and came out with its first premiere, Frank Wedekind’s Lulu the same year. When establishing this theatre, the goal was to accomplish the continuity of an artistic and aesthetic obligation towards the theatre arts - a task that cannot be handled by the highly subsidized state- and city theatres with their notoriously broad pluralistic approach. Contrary' to most other theatre structures in Germany, Theatre on the Ruhr maintains a repertoire of plays on which work goes on continuously. Performances by this theatre are analogous to a work-in-progress. By the end of its seventh year. Theatre on the Ruhr had put on 21 productions, some of them, like Woody Allen’s God (1981) still running. Five of its productions have been transmitted by television. Shakespeare’s A Midsummernights Dream, first put on stage in the 82/ 83 season and acclaimed throughout Wesl-Germany, was invited to festivals in Nancy, Parma and Rotterdam. At the BITEF (Belgrade) it won together with this theatre’s performance of Great and Little by Botho Strauss the distinction for best overall artistic achievement. The 1987 production of Dead without Burial by Jean Paul Sartre was presented at the Berlin Theatre Festival as one of the outstanding performances of the season 87/88. In 1988 Theatre on the Ruhr was voted best theatre of the year by the theatrical critiques of the republic. In 1985 Theatre on the Ruhr was presented at the European Theatre Festival at Athens and toured four Yugoslav cities. These tours became the basis for an international exchange and cooperation in which Theatre on the Ruhr took the lead. Close cooperation with Yugoslavia and Turkey was established. Theatre on the Ruhr organises an international festival at Muelheim presenting a given country in three subsequent years. Under the motto of Theatre landscape theatres from
